Capo Comino

Capo Comino is located on the east coast, about 40 km south of Olbia. The journey from Olbia ferry port or airport takes just under an hour. A car is recommended. The small village is situated on a gently sloping sandy beach with the most beautiful dunes on the east coast and a rocky beach that is ideal for snorkelling.

Coming from the north, once you leave the large bay of San Giovanni near S. Lucia behind you, the coastal road shows itself from its most beautiful side. After a 6-kilometre drive through fragrant scrubland and pine forests, the sandy bay of Capo Comino opens up, known for its unusually high dunes. The cape with its lighthouse marks the easternmost point of the island. In the background, the bizarre silhouette of the Supramonte mountain range rises up.

The beach is famous for its fine, white sand. The water is clear and captivates with its unusually light blue colour. At the southern end of the beach is the tiny skerry island of Isola Rossa, so called because it is made of red porphyry rock. It can be reached by swimming or wading. The beach has been used as a film set on several occasions; for example, Guy Ritchie shot the comedy Swept Away here in 2001, starring Madonna in the lead role.

The sea off Capo Comino is an excellent snorkelling and diving area. Divers can explore the remains of a Roman fleet from the time of Emperor Nero, as well as the wreck of the Commandante Bafile from 1942 and a French sports plane from 1963.

Capo Comino is a small, tranquil settlement; those who fancy an extended shopping trip, a visit to a restaurant or nightlife will have to accept a 5-15 minute drive to one of the larger neighbouring towns. Capo Comino's main attraction is its beautiful natural surroundings. The surrounding area is sparsely populated. No building is permitted on the 3 km long rocky coastline to the north with its adjacent pine forest, and to the south, a nature reserve stretches 5 km along the coast. The rugged hinterland has never been able to support entire villages; here, there are only a few scattered shepherds' huts among the rocks, small wooded areas and scrubland.
